Energy Security

Muskrat Falls is a $12.7 billion investment in energy security. The International Energy Association defines energy security as “the uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price" (International Energy Association, 2018). Will Muskrat Falls provide energy security in this sense of making it available at an affordable price?

It is now widely acknowledged that the project will at least double electricity rates on the island.

This increase will cut in half the energy security of many citizens. As soon as it comes on stream, a large part of our population who cannot pay more will then have to pay the same for less electricity, which, in a cold climate like ours means less warmth. There is good reason to believe that the project will diminish rather than improve our energy security. By what economic logic can a $12.7B investment result in less energy security?
